The team of volunteers at our camps remains the most crucial element of the rehabilitation process for here are individuals who, at
one time, were struggling amputees themselves. Having rediscovered life through their new limbs, they know exactly what it
takes to emerge triumphant in this tragedy.
Two of our dedicated team members:
Maheshbhai :
Maheshbhai came to the MSS camp in the 1990s as a young man. A milkman by profession, he lost his leg in a road accident and consequently was deprived of his only source of livelihood.
A life of desolation followed till his arrival at the MSS camp one day.
What ensued was not only a new limb but also a new life, one of hope and renewed energy.
Today, he lives a life of complete economic independence, cycling tirelessly for almost 14 kilometers everyday with his new limb, selling milk. He also uses the opportunity to inform people about MSS and its camps.
He is a committed volunteer and attends every camp in the country. A jovial character with a never-say-die spirit, he sets alight the camps with his brilliant display of song and dance.
Mrunal :
Mrunal was born with a congenital defect; he had no right leg waist-downwards. A doctor advised his mother that the newborn would never be able to walk and that she should poison him.
The resolute mother shot back saying that she would do whatever it took to to bring him up.
They first came to the Valsad camp when Mrunal was six years old.
After a number of tearful attempts and some tricks (Ms. Abhilasha Singhvi would tempt the child to walk that extra bit by placing a piece of chocolate in his walking path), young Mrunal learnt how to walk.
Then started a period of 12 years when Mrunal would visit the camp every year to get a new limb to fit his growing body.
The frequent visits made him sensitive towards the noble cause and the suffering involved.
After turning eighteen, Mrunal, who is now an engineer, became a full-time volunteer at MSS and continues to be one till date. He says he feels a rare sense of joy and contentment while serving at the camps.
