The free Artificial Limbs and Polio Calipers camps organized by Manav Seva Sannidhi (MSS) across India for over the past two decades
are unique not only in concept but also in the quality of service provided. The distinctive and pioneering
aspect about these camps is that the motivating volunteer force here is almost entirely made up of beneficiaries of previous camps. With a pervading personal touch, the camp's activities revolve around the
patients and their needs. Besides free prostheses, free boarding and lodging is also provided to the patients and their
companions. Beyond the mechanical process of providing prosthesis, these camps also meet the emotional and psychological
needs of the patients. During the camp, patients are encouraged to practice using their new limbs and becoming accustomed
to using them. Persistent effort is made to ensure that no patient leaves unless he/ she feels confident of walking with the
artificial limbs, independent of crutches. Patients experience a sense of bonding and fellowship in their common handicap and emerge
triumphant together. They come supported on crutches and go home walking tall and free with their dignity and self- respect
restored. From an ashram in Haridwar and Rishikesh to a Gurudwara in Chandigarh or a temple in Delhi, the venues for
these camps are carefully chosen to reflect amply the magnitude of the humanitarian cause. From tribals to common
housewives, quarry workers to ex-soldiers, they all come and go back to face the world with renewed vigor. A total of 38
camps have been held till date and over 50,000 patients have been treated.
