— Late Dr. L. M. Singhvi on Ms. Abhilasha Singhvi
"Abhilasha has so completely identified herself with the cause of social empowerment of the disabled and the amelioration of their physical condition by equipping them with artificial limbs that her name is synonymous with Manav Seva.
She made the modest beginning with the involvement of Dr. I. G. Patel, doyen of economists and myself as co-trustees. That modest beginning has now grown into a mighty stream of humanitarian service that has shown a consistent, passionate and rare commitment to the cause of the disabled and limbless. Abhilasha is the heart and soul of that initiative. The countless cases in which she has provided artificial limbs and calipers is an epic story of sharing sorrow and suffering with empathy and with a resolve to make a difference in the lives of those who have lost their limbs owing to various situations and circumstances.
Abhilasha's camps are distinctive because they are not impersonally institutional but because she personally bonds with every single patient. The pioneering aspect about her camp is that it is the previous beneficiaries who have received limbs & calipers in prior camps, that form the motivating volunteer force.
Abhilasha has adopted for herself the ascetic and austere compassionate commitment to the cause of the disabled who have been marginalised. The beneficiaries of the camps are the poorest of the poor who are underprivileged and disadvantaged. Her camps are profoundly secular, multi-religious and without any distinction of caste and creed.
Abhilasha lives with the patients, eats with the patients and personally trains and teaches everyone to walk with confidence. They perform garba together, they celebrate the overcoming of sorrow together, they have satsang together.
Abhilasha is a trained lawyer, born into a distinguished family of lawyers. She finds the fulfillment of her life's mission in the work of Manav Seva Sannidhi with which she has become synonymous in the remote areas of Gujarat, distant mountainous regions in Uttarakhand, in urban Delhi, Chandigarh, Meerut, Rishikesh and Haridwar. Her camps have acquired a charismatic renown. Here, patients are assisted and motivated to use their new limbs and calipers and resume their livelihood. In Uttarakhand, Indian soldiers from the Sino-Indian war who had lost their limbs on account of frostbite were provided the artificial limbs for the first time successfully after a time gap of almost 43 years. MSS has now acquired a pan Indian presence with camps held across the country."

The idea of going to India’s most infamous prison came to Ms. Abhilasha Singhvi while working on amputees from the Sabarmati Jail at a camp in Ahmedabad in 2006.
When asked in a lighter vein by her if he would use the new found freedom to flee from prison, an inmate with a newly fitted prosthetic said, ‘I would never do anything which would bring disrepute to you.’ This touching comment inspired her to formally apply for permission to hold a rehabilitation camp inside the Tihar Jail.
It was the first time ever in the history of the Jail that a camp of this nature was held there. The most gratifying and heartwarming reward came in the form of a comment made by one of the inmates; he said that if they were ever released, they would like to offer their services to MSS in any way that they could. Such is the healing power of human service.

“Abhilashaji has made the prisoners of Tihar feel that society cares for them. The compassion of Abhilashaji and her volunteers has made them feel remorse for the crimes committed by them. We would like to have many more such camps.”

Inside Tihar Jail, Manav Seva Sannidhi carried its mission into a space often defined by confinement rather than care. This initiative focused on inmates living with physical disabilities individuals whose rehabilitation needs are frequently overlooked.
Through on-ground assessment, prosthetic support, and guided interaction, the program emphasized dignity over judgement. The experience went beyond physical assistance, creating moments of trust, emotional connection, and renewed self-belief within the prison environment.
Our camps are powered by dedicated volunteers many of whom are former beneficiaries themselves.
From guiding patients to offering emotional support, volunteers play a crucial role in every rehabilitation journey.
